Court Structure

The courts of the Cayman Islands administer justice in keeping with the Constitution, the Laws of the Islands and the well-established principles of common law which have been developed by the local, the British and other courts of the Commonwealth of Nations.

The structure of the court system is hierarchical with appeals lying to the Court above at each stage. 

Summary Court > Grand Court > Court of Appeals > Her Majesty's Judicial Committee of the Privy Council

Financial Services Division

  • The Financial Services Division is Specialty Court with jurisdiction over complex civil cases that arise out of the financial sector in the Cayman Islands.  Since its creation in 2009, the FSD implements special procedures and skills required to handle complex financial litigation.
  • The Division is served by six judges including the Hon. Chief Justice and two of the other full-time Judges of the Grand Court, as well as three part-time Judges.

  • Specific procedures (such as those dealing with companies and trusts) are set out in the laws of the Cayman Islands and the Rules that support them.
  • Important judgments of the FSD are published in the Cayman Islands Law Reports
