RA's Guide to Legal Research

Searching the Catalog

Did you know that you can search the library's catalog using Subject Terms? Subject Terms point you to all the books in the library that have been assigned a certain, fixed term or phrase as their subject. A Subject Term search will almost always produce more relevant results than a keyword search. For example, you may want to search for study aids to help you begin preparing for final exams.

To begin a Subject Term search in the library catalog, click on "Advanced Search."

Select "Subject Terms" in the drop down menu next to the search bar. Type your search term(s), such as "study aids", and then click the search button.

Down the left-hand side, you can limit your search results to books, journal articles, etc. Further, you have the option to refine your subject terms to make your search more precise. For example, you can select "study guides," "hornbooks," etc. Over on the right, you'll find the call number for the print books and and by selecting  "Map It," you'll see a map of exactly where to find it within the library. If you select an e-book, you find a link to the resource. For more information on Subject Term searching or searching the catalog in general, don't hesitate to seek the assistance of our Reference Librarians.

Printing, Copying & Scanning

Copying & Scanning

See here for the library's current copying & scanning policies. Please note that scanning is always free for students.

Printing

The faculty member you're working with will need to contact IT to let them know that you will be working for them. IT should then give you instructions on how to print to law school printers as an RA. If you're going to be working extensively with or in the library, please let a librarian know - we may be able to give you access to library staff printers.
