Day 1 - Tuesday

1:00 – 1:30pm     Orientation

Instructor: Professor Lisa A. Goodman

Summary: An overview of the purpose, goals, format, and organization of the Legal Research Bootcamp.

1:30 – 3:00pm     Introduction to Legal Resources & Research Methodology 

Instructor: Professor Kristen Rowlett

Summary: An introduction to the publishers of legal information, organization of legal information and essential legal research tools. Participants will also learn about advance search strategies and techniques.

3:30 – 5:00pm    Secondary Sources

Instructor: Professor Lisa A. Goodman

Summary: An introduction to the various types of secondary sources, including the information contained within them, where to find and how to update them, as well as under which circumstances they are particularly useful in the legal research process.

Day 2 - Wednesday

10:00 – 11:30am     Statutes & Federal Legislative History

Instructor: Professor Malikah Hall

Summary: An overview of federal and Texas statutory law and federal legislative histories, including the statute publication process, how to expand your research using electronic and annotated resources, and how to locate compiled federal legislative histories.

1:00 – 2:30pm    Case Law

Instructor: Professor Kristen Rowlett

Summary: An overview of essential search strategies for finding case law. Participants will learn about the publication of federal and state cases, using the Topics and Headnotes to find case law, and updating cases using citators to ensure the law is still valid.

3:00 – 4:30pm     Administrative Law

Instructor: Professor Cynthia Burress

Summary: An overview of the administrative process as well as federal and state administrative law sources. Participants will learn to locate federal and state rules & regulations, pending regulations, regulatory histories, and adjudicative materials.

1:00 – 2:30pm     Dockets & Practice Materials 

Instructor: Professor Cynthia Burress

Summary: An introduction to finding and researching court dockets, court rules, jury instructions, formbooks, and other practice-related materials. For the docket section of the session, a current subscription to Bloomberg Law is recommended but not required.

Summary: An introduction to various resources available for conducting business-related research and competitive intelligence, including company information and demographics, SEC information, and current awareness tools.
