Library Tip of the Week: Journal of Things We Like (Lots)

Jotwell – the Journal of Things We Like (Lots) -- is a unique online law journal. Each of its more than 250 contributors writes once a year, identifying a recent work in his or her subject that deserves wider attention. The reviews are short, averaging about 1000 words each, and written in non-technical language.  Jotwell is divided into 17 subject-matter sections, but the front page at Jotwell.com aggregates all the content and publishes one short article every weekday.

Law students will find Jotwell valuable in three ways:

First, several sections cover common law school subjects (Torts, Contracts, Property, Civil Procedure, Criminal Law, Constitutional Law and others). Reading what has scholars excited is a good way to learn about cutting edge issues as or more quickly than professors do and could provide insight into potential law review article or seminar paper topics.

Second, Jotwell provides exposure to examples of legal writing and analysis of legal topics. This exposure can assist students as they navigate their first year legal writing classes.

Last, but not least, many of Jotwell’s sections offer a gentle introduction to legal scholarship, and the wide variety of subjects covered might spark a student’s interest in a field that they could choose to explore in more details in upper-level courses.
